Honestly, start reading the main books 1-5 (A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons). If you want to do another read-through, I highly suggest incorporating the novellas as well.

Yeah. I assume the ending is roughly how GRRM told D&D it would go, but a big part of why GRRM doesn't want to write more ASOIAF is he doesn't know how to get to that ending. So D&D decided they had to figure out their own path to that ending, rather than just having the show end differently than the books 01, and then they did it badly.
