I used the Easterling/Southerling Mounted minis as Leaders for the Second Edition as I believe that Nazgul would be more focused on the Hunt for the Ring than generaling an army. They are purchased at the same rate as other leaders.
Typically the shadow has been a favored side, especially in the old 1st edition, though it is pretty close to 50/50 with the 2nd edition. Both games are day-long events preceded by a buildup of nearly-intolerable anticipation. In the end, this decision comes down to two things: I like the Lord of the Rings universe ever-so-slightly more than Star Wars, and the "bad guys" side in War of the Ring is ever-so-slightly more interesting to play.
